David Smith, Chairman and CEO of Western Print Group brings over 40 years of printing expertise to the organization. Indentured as an apprentice typesetter in South Africa, he soon qualified as a Master Journeyman, and in 1966 he proceeded to open his first printing works in Cape Town, South Africa. He subsequently grew this business through technology and acquisitions. These various companies were all grouped together under the Tricolor Press umbrella.
After emigrating to the United States, Mr. Smith acquired his first American printing company in 1993. Western Printing & Graphics, originally a four-person enterprise, was the first of 14 similar acquisitions, and under Mr. Smith’s aegis it grew into a fully-fledged commercial printing company with a flexo-label division. In 2006 he started a new company, Britefoil Tag & Label, specializing in the manufacture of foil-embossed tags and labels, which now has a large range of products that are distributed nationally and internationally.
Most recently, Mr. Smith has continued his thrust by acquiring Orange County’s premier business printer, “Kenny the Printer”. This company has been at the forefront of providing customer service and quality printing in Orange County. The group now includes American Pacific Mailing as well as Pacific Promotional Products.
Cal Laird, Chief Operating and Financial Officer of Western Print Group has 25 years of management and executive experience, ranging from the Fortune 50 to pure start-ups and spanning publicly traded companies to friends and family funded deals.
Cal is an operating executive with extensive experience in generating operational excellence and superior financial performance in family-owned and closely-held private businesses. He has played this role as the chief executive, business advisor/consultant and as interim chief executive in diverse situations and industries. As an entrepreneur, he has also led a $30 Million organization and personally been involved as founding CEO or 2nd wave CEO in numerous ventures. Cal is an expert at simply solving complex logistical and organizational problems and at applying practical approaches to turning strategy into reality. His diverse leadership experiences include start-ups, acquisitions, divestitures, strategic repositioning, major change management initiatives and large IT systems implementations.
In his career, Cal has been a part of the Procter & Gamble, Price Waterhouse Management Consulting, Allergan and United Ad Label organizations. He earned his A.B. degree in Finance and Political Science from the University of Illinois and his MBA from Harvard Business School.
Stan Spencer is a seasoned Sales and Business Development executive with over 30 years experience in the printing and business forms industries. He began his career with Wallace Computer Services, a Fortune 1000 organization known for its outstanding sales management development process. In a 20 year career with Wallace, Stan rose to manage the bulk of Wallace's sales and print management functions throughout the West Coast. Following Wallace's merger with the Moore Corporation, Stan joined a regional print broker as its Vice President of Sales, where he built a strong sales team spanning all of California and Hawaii. With Western Print Group since 2007, Stan as Sr. Vice President of Sales, Stan leads the group's selling and business development efforts. In his spare time, he is an avid runner and cyclist. Stan earned his B.S. from San Francisco State University.
